Howell at the Moon

A tale of outstanding wine from the top of Howell Mountain.

About Howell at the Moon

My mission is to offer Cabernet Sauvignon made from the highest quality grapes grown at my vineyard high atop Howell Mountain. These grapes were planted from scratch and all the important elements of wine making researched and controlled to offer a product (to the most critical oenophile) that can compete with the finest Cabs in the world. No expense or expertise has been spared to achieve my goals. In this process the most qualified consultants including soil experts, vineyard managers, and wine makers have been employed. These experts are well known for their ability to help create a unique and delicious wine that will grow better with age.

The first time I ever saw Napa Valley was in 1982 while attending a medical conference. I had started collecting wines 10 years prior and was already a member of several wine societies in New York City with a growing cellar. I was mesmerized by the physical beauty and spirit of wine country, and made a commitment to myself to return, live and possibly grow and make wine. After retiring from the medical practice of Urology for 27 years at New York University Medical Center, I felt it was time to live out my dreams and passion. In 2000, after two years of searching for a vineyard homesite on Howell Mountain in Angwin California, (finally) a property became available that had one owner since the mid 1920s. The 21 acre parcel had an existing red brick farmhouse, and was planted to grow apples and walnuts. After a period of due diligence, my first Cabernet Sauvignon vineyard of 3.5 acres was planted the following spring. A second vineyard was planted in Spring of 2004 on a site 100 feet higher than my earlier vineyard at 2000 ft above the valley and referred to as the Knoll. Every aspect of the wine making process from the fruit picked in my vineyard to production and barrel storage has been researched with no expense spared to be able to offer Howell Mountain single vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon to the most critical wine aficionado.

Lillian's Vineyard

In 2001, prior to planting my initial vineyard, Dr. Daniel Roberts, aka, Dr. Dirt was employed to analyze my volcanic soils and to design a 3.5 acre vineyard to complement the Howell Mountain terroir that was to be planted. Several weeks of analysis and research, including my climbing into the large soil test pits that were dug in order for me to have a better understanding why wines from this terroir could be so unique and special, resulted in a decision to plant rootstock 3309, with Bordeaux clone 337.The feeling was that these combinations might soften the highly tannic wines produced in this appellation creating more balance without compromising the complexity and concentration of the grapes. The remaining 1.5 acres was planted in 2004 after years of attempting and finally receiving timber harvest, and erosion control permits from the appropriate state and county commissions. This vineyard was named to honor the memory of my mother, Lillian Cohen, who instilled the knowledge to work as hard as you can at whatever goals you may want to achieve, and then hope you're a little lucky.

The Knoll Vineyard

As a result of Dr. Roberts earlier soil analysis, a second 3 acre vineyard was planted as well in 2004 on a knoll resting 100 ft above the farmhouse and initial plantings. Even though this vineyard is on the same property, the soils proved to be very different, being deeper and richer, enabling us to plant rootstock 112 with clone 4.We feel this combination will deepen the potential of this already vigorous young vineyard and complement earlier vineyard development. Cover crops include rose clover, crimson clover, and Blando brome, which complement the vines already planted, and remain consistent with our belief in sustainable farming.

Vineyard Legend: Tysie

My Jack Russell terrier remains the central focus for the logo on my bottle. Tysie is 8 years old, born in New York and has finally mellowed out a little bit. Her responsibilities include letting us know when the grapes have achieved maximum ripeness at harvest by howling, clearing the vineyard of multiple varmints, including deer and rabbits, and running for any ball until you need shoulder surgery. Tysie is presently sheltered in the City, as there have been several coyotes seen on the property.

Proprietor: Marc Cohen

Marc received both BA and MD degrees from Temple University. He retired from medical practice after 27 years at NYU Medical School in 1999, receiving a BS in Management from NYU that May. Marc researched and finally found and purchased his ideal property in August 2000 on Howell Mountain. Marc has taken courses at Napa College in wine marketing and winemaking on a hillside vineyard. Marc is also a principal and wine program developer at Myth Restaurant in San Francisco.

Winemaker: Timothy Milos

Tim joined our team in May of 2006, and is the winemaker at Girard Winery. He was a Doctoral candidate in plant diseases at Cornell University, and a Masters candidate at UC Davis in Enology. He has become our winemaker in charge while Sarah attends to her family obligations (twin infants and a toddler). Sarah still remains as a consultant for Tim.
