*1997 Nickel & Nickel Carpenter Cabernet Sauvignon
Nickel & Nickel John C. Sullenger Vineyard Carpenter Vintage Cabernet Sauvignon, Oakville, USA 1997
[WE 92 ]
An offshoot label of Far Niente. This is one of four new Nickel & Nickel single-vineyard Cabernets. It's tight and brawny, with earth and black plum, but also some sulfur that goes away after breathing and swirling. Concentrated black fruit is supported by espresso notes and chocolate. Finishes full and dry, with evenly spread tannins. (WE)
Dense, rich and polished, with a complex band of earthy currant, mineral, sage, cedar and tobacco notes, gaining nuance and depth on an intricate finish. (WS)
The southernmost vineyard in the Nickel & Nickel Cabernet program, Carpenter Vineyard is situated just east of the city of Napa at the base of the Vaca mountain range in Coombsville. A bold expression of the vineyard, the Carpenter Cabernet Sauvignon bears strong resemblance to hillside fruit, yet the vineyard is fairly flat. Aromas of cassis, tea and herb greet the palate, then develop into current, tobacco, dark chocolate and sweet toasty oak flavors. The tight core of fruit surrounded by fleshy tannins is the signature of this vineyard.
