*2012 Aston Pinot Noir
Aston Estate Pinot Noir "Power", Sonoma Coast, USA 2012
The 2012 growing season was truly idyllic, a perfect mixture of warm sunny days tempered by maritime fog provided incredible conditions that, when coupled with the relatively small amount of rain late in the season, allowed us to harvest the optimally ripened clusters at our leisure. The quality and quantity of wine produced from the "True" Sonoma Coast in 2012 is going to go down in history as a benchmark vintage. Denser than previous vintages, the 2012 Aston Estate Pinot Noir is similar to the 2009 vintage with more red fruit characteristics giving it great balance.
Impressive from first pour, our 2012 Aston Estate Pinot Noir dazzles with its seductive deep garnet color and silken texture. The wine offers abundant aromas of ripe fruit including red currants, wild red berries, and black cherries. Focusing on the always-elegant Dijon clones, this Pinot Noir is fruit-driven with a soft smokiness and sweet smell of night-bloom jasmine. The creamy texture and refreshing acidity create an incredibly pleasurable mouth feel that leads to a long and satisfying finish. Spectacularly approachable at such a young age the 2012 Aston Estate will continue to develop in the coming years.
Located approximately five miles and two ridge lines in from the coast, the vineyard benefits from the cooling effects of the ocean, yet is situated just outside the fog line, so days are long and warm. The vineyard faces southwest and thrives in a microclimate typified by full-sun days and average-plus temperatures that are a standout in the otherwise cooler Sonoma Coast climate.
A dream opportunity, Thomas oversaw the cultivation of this prime 40-acre site and selected the ideal complement of Dijon clones to suit the Goldridge Loam soil and moderate temperatures of the Brushy Creek Loop microclimate. Today, Thomas manages all vineyard activities ensuring optimum crop-yield and quality goals are achieved.
