Warm holiday seasons greeting to all you from rainy California! As we move into December everyone has a smile on their face as our first real rain storms of 2014 move into our parched state.
The weather in the last three years has produced outstanding vintages in 2012, 2013 and 2014 but it is also the driest period ever recorded. A fourth year of drought could bring serious consequences to all aspects of California living as well as grape production. Please keep your fingers crossed in hope for a very wet and snowy winter here in California!
The old proverb “the greatest Christmas gift of all is spending time with someone you love” is a perfect thought, but I might add… “But even better with a fine glass of red wine in your hand”!
The holiday season is the time to bring out your best wines for your special people and enjoy life to its fullest; at PrimeCellar we have some spectacular reds for you to choose from. Starting with 2012 Kokomo Russian River Pinot Noir; Winemaker Erik Miller Pinots always feature expansive floral aromas of rose pedals, sweet cherry and earth with great freshness; on the palate flavors of plum and exotic spices wrap around the cherry fruit. A beautiful wine with exquisite balance, in the style of a great Chambolle Musigny that would pair wonderfully with any pork chop, tenderloin, and mushroom dish.
For phenomenal value and larger events I have not tasted any Cabernet Sauvignon that even comes close quality wise to the 100% estate grown fruit from Priest Ranch when it comes to matter of price. Winemaker Craig Beckers wine always have great purity of fruit and in abundant quantities. Priest Ranch is a delicious, strong and direct wine with juicy ripe raspberry fruit and a touch of oak. Craigs 2009 Somerston “Stornaway” Red blend comes from selected parcels of the Priest Ranch and takes the opulence and layers of silky fruit to a level reserved only by the greatest wines from my beloved Bordeaux and the commune of St. Emilion. A blend of 2/3 Merlot and 1/3 Cabernet Franc the wine loaded with cassis and red currant fruit and carried across the palate by incredible texture, freshness and balance. These are also the exact qualities you will find in absurdly priced, great vintages of Ch. Ausone, Ch. Cheval Blanc, Ch. Pavie and Ch. Angelus.
For fans of the “Powerful Cabs” look no further than Lamborn Family Vineyards 2009 at the top of Howell Mountain in Napa. Masculine and deep, strong wine with blackberry fruit, racy acidity and a spicy-mineral element from the red volcanic soil. The power of Ch. Latour with the racy acidity of Ch. Lafite Rothschild all in one bottle and thousands of dollars less!
Cheers and warmest wishes to you and your family and I hope you have a great holiday season.
